The Miramichi has always been rich with aboriginal heritage. The First
Nation communities in the area invite you to explore the opportunities
that they have to offer. These ancient settlements have been
continuously inhabited for nearly 3000 years, and generation after
generation have flourished here. Today, the Mi'kmaq people of
Metepenagiag and Eel Ground, have not forgotten their ancestors or
their deep bond with the Miramichi River. The river has always
provided an abundance of fish as a source of food, while the forests
offer shelter and many other necessities.
First Nations heritage is expressed in no better way than at the
Metepenagiag Heritage Park in the Mi’kmaq community of Red Bank. The
Metepenagiag Heritage Park showcases the community and tells the
story of two nationally recognized historic sites -- the Augustine and
Oxbow mounds. These sites have combined to awaken the past, and
rekindle cultural pride. The state of the art interpretive centre
puts the visitor in touch with this unique community, and its special
people. While there, be sure to view their award winning movie, listen
to their songs and stories, see the tools used by their ancestors, or
shop for a unique gift crafted by Mi'kmaq artisans. The exhibit is
open daily from 9am - 4pm during the summer months. Metepenagiag is a
wonderful example of how a community can express their heritage while
providing a world class tourism product.
A few kilometers away, you’ll find the Eel Ground First Nation. It is
renowned for its annual pow wow and hospitality. This popular event
is family oriented and colorful, and is capped off with an amazing
fireworks display. You’ll want to come back every year.
So visit Miramichi’s aboriginal communities. Come for the heritage
and stay for the opportunities. 3000 years of history is waiting for
you.
